Bookmark with Pen Holder

I saw this great idea for a bookmark last year, with the plan to make some to send to a few friends for Christmas…but that didn’t quite happen! So it’s been sitting there on my Gifts and Wrapping Ideas Pinterest board just waiting. I had some fabric left over from making the Beach Towel with Pillow, and that is what I wanted to use. And now I have!

I found Caroline’s instructions over at Sew Can She quite easy to follow. But I changed them just a little bit! Caroline’s bookmark, and just about all the options that I saw on Pinterest, have the elastic bookmark going all the way through the pen pocket. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

But I wanted to post mine to friends, and to save on postage costs, it’s lighter to send without the hard cover notebook. By making the bookmarks with the elastic just attached at the top and bottom, it makes it very easy to remove and replace with a longer length if required to fit over a different sized notebook. And also, when the elastic stretches – as elastic tends to do – it’s easy to replace and continue using.

I found Caroline’s measurements worked well to suit the book I was using, so for us metric measurers, I cut:

2 fabric strips 20cm x 5cm (for the bookmark)

1 fabric strip 25cm x 5cm (for the pocket)

elastic cut a couple of centimetres longer than the length of your book – I used Woven Ribbed Non-Roll elastic, 20mm wide. I also used normal thinner elastic, but prefer the wider one. It just looks nicer 🙂

Fold the longer piece in half, and stitch across the fold.

Make a ‘sandwich’ with the 3 pieces: bottom piece right side up, folded piece on top with raw edges aligned to the left (folded end to the middle), top piece right side down

You can see here that I have also hemmed the ends. This helped in the beginning when it came to inserting the elastic. As I became a bit more confident making these, I just folded over the ends when sewing up the sides, which is the next step.

Can you see in this photo that I haven’t hemmed the short ends, just folded them over? So I’ve still created a hem, but it’s not sewn separately.

I’ve also clipped the corners.

All you do now is turn it right side out, and sew down the middle to make space for 2 pens or pencils. I left a couple without this middle seam. It’s up to you!

Since the ends are already neat, you just need to insert the elastic and sew across to secure. Make sure it doesn’t twist!

I hope these instructions are reasonably clear, but I am not a sewer of any great talent. You might find following Caroline’s instructions easier lol.

And you’re done! Once you’ve done a couple and worked out the best way for you to do them, you’ll find they are quite quick to make.

I think these would make lovely end of year gifts for school kids. Using left over scraps of fabric from another project, an old bedsheet or tablecloth perhaps, all you really need to purchase is elastic. So it is very economical! Pick up some hard cover notebooks through the year when on sale, and you’ve got a small but substantial gift.

You can also personalise these by embroidering a name or adding some bling! Just use your imagination!

  1. This is such a cute idea! I sometimes like to take notes or save a quote from a book, so a pen near me at all times would come in handy.
