It could be the next big thing in home decorating and design: Elegant Swamp style. You heard it here first! Just wait, it will become a common design request on TV shows like House Rules and The Block, mark my words!!
Or maybe it won’t…
These were for our group’s theme for our school’s trivia night last weekend. Since there were 3 Fionas on our table (including me), can you guess the theme we went with??!
When we suggested that all the non-Fionas wear ogre ears, one of our group suggested that perhaps ogres weren’t very ‘elegant’. Well, we’ll see about that!!
I took on the job of creating the headpieces for us all. There are plenty of ideas on Pinterest, some more elaborate and ‘true’ than others. I pinned some to my new board Trivia Night 2018.
We weren’t trying to re-create the movie, so I went with a very simple design. A quick trip to our local discount shop, and I found some headbands and green foam sheets. There was even glittery foam sheets! The original idea was for the 3 Fionas to wear tiaras (but we didn’t tell the others this plan haha!) but when I saw the green sparkles I thought that perhaps it would go down better if we did, and the 5 girls on our table could have glittery ears. I love sparkles, don’t you 😉
I made up a cardboard template first to check the size, then used that to cut out the pieces. The men’s ears are bigger, while the girls’ are small and cute.
Of course, the Fionas were going to get tiaras as well. Again, I made a template from cardboard making the design as similar to the ‘real’ one as possible. I painted them gold, and added a red sequin to the middle.
The ears were all pinched and rolled, and hot glued. Then the ears and tiaras were attached to the headbands, also using hot glue. The men’s ears are more tubular. You might notice that the girls’ ears on the night are a little different to the ones shown at the top of this post. I wasn’t entirely happy, so remade them a couple of hours before we were due to wear them! I was definitely happy with the final result!
One of the other Fionas came up with this beautiful centrepiece for our table
And I found this scarf at the Op Shop (thrift store) to use as a table runner
Are you getting the ‘elegant swamp’ idea now??
We all brought various offerings of food to share, so it’s a bit hard to see the table decorations in all their glory, but here we are – ‘Ogrewhelming Force’
That’s me right in the middle of the photo above.
And, with a big cheer for the Elegant Swamp style, we won the Best Dressed Table prize!
I was very impressed that just about everyone wore their headpieces for the majority of the night!
As for the results of the trivia night…well, after the first and second rounds we were coming first, but after the third and final round we came second. By just. one. point! With our very clever and inspired table name of Ogrewhelming Force, we were bound to do well!
We all had a great night, despite missing out on winning by Just One Point (I am getting over it…), and it didn’t take a lot of effort to decorate our table in our theme. Seriously, we only came up with the idea 4 days before the event!
What do you think of the new decorator style, do you think it will take off 😉 !!
