One of a kind Pokémon quilt cover

First of all, happy 2017! I hope you all enjoyed a fabulous Christmas and New Year period with family and friends!

Here’s a very brief look at our Christmas Day, held at our house

Back to the matter at hand!

You may have been following along with the Pokémon inspired bedroom makeover for our son. In one post I did mention that I had thoughts of creating our own quilt (or doona) cover.

We perused eBay, and chose some Pokémon fabric with which to decorate. But finding sheets to make the actual cover took a bit longer. You see, the favourite colour of our young man is yellow…because Pikachu, you know lol. And I had a lot of trouble finding a yellow sheet…

I had suggested that it might be a good idea to have two colours, so the quilt would suit both summer and winter conditions. So we decided upon blue for the other side. Not really the colour combination you’d think of when you think Pokémon, but that’s ok!

I cut up the patterned fabric, and played around with the pieces to see which panels we’d like on which side

I took measurements from one of his other quilt covers to work out what size to cut the sheets. Don’t forget to allow for hems! I used the ‘top’ of the sheet – the end where they have the larger hem – as the bottom edge of the quilt cover. The extra fabric would be stronger for the press studs.

Measuring and cutting took a long time…who’d have thought a measuring tape and fabric sliding around a table could be so much fun!

Not having an overlocker (and not needing one), I zigzag stitched along all the cut edges to stop them fraying.

To keep the character panels neat, I ironed the edges under, leaving a small black border around each. Then I placed them on the appropriate sheet. About one third of the way up the sheet was where I chose to position them. It was much easier to sew them on before I sewed the two sheets together!

It was quick work to sew the two sheets together, leaving the bottom edge open. Just remember to put the right sides together, so the hems stay inside when you turn it the right way out. I folded the bottom edge up to create an extra sturdy base for the press studs to be sewn to.

There was even something to decorate the pillowcase!

I finished this before Christmas, and was wondering whether to keep it for a Christmas gift. But when we had the first sleep-under-the-Christmas-tree for this year, I decided that was the night to produce it!

It looks pretty good on his bed, too!

And our cat still can’t keep off it!

The only thing I’d do differently, is to put the decorative panels closer to the centre of the quilt cover so they don’t hang over the edge so much.

It did require a fair amount of concentration, but it was reasonably easy to put together. And I can be almost positive that no-one else has a Pokémon quilt cover quite like this one!

I have basic sewing skills, so if I can do it, you should give it a try too! And if you have sewing skills, be sure to pass them on to your children or grandchildren. I was lucky to have my mum show me the basics, and I did a little at school as well. While I don’t do a lot of sewing, I can use these skills when required 😉

Have you made a one-off quilt cover to suit a theme? Please share!
