Ash Ketchum (Pokémon) costume

Whilst the majority of Australian schools had their Book Week Parade some months ago, our school had another major event happening then, so our Book Parade was this morning!

Of course we had to create an Ash Ketchum costume…you have been following along with the Pokémon bedroom makeover, haven’t you? So you’d know how popular Pokémon is (and has been for some years) in this house!

As well as consulting some of the Pokémon books we have, I used this pin as inspiration for Ash’s outfit. There were only a couple of details we needed to come up with to make the outfit look really good, most of the items we had at home already 🙂

The only thing I bought specifically for this outfit was a blue jacket from the Op Shop, which cost $8. It’s too big for a 10 year old boy, but it did the job. I edged it with yellow tape in the appropriate places.

This was actually done back in August, as I was being extra prepared for Book Week to take place then.

We had the red and black cap, and I placed some white tape across the existing logo. I drew the new logo on paper, cut it out, and used craft glue to stick it on. I was going to draw straight on to the cap, but thought the ink would probably run.

Apart from those two items, the rest of the outfit is very straightforward. A white buttoned shirt, a black top, and jeans. It’s very hot here today, so instead of jeans we went with some lighter pants. His school shirt with a black singlet over the top, then the blue and yellow jacket over it all. Easy!

Ash also had to have some Pokeballs. I was going to paint up some polystyrene balls, then we remembered the collection of Pokeballs that come from vending machines with small characters in them that we have. Perfect! I made wire hooks to attach them to the belt.

Add in a couple of Pokémon, and it’s done. Yes, we did have fingerless gloves to complete the look. As I was loading up these photos I noticed that they were not worn. Oh well. I’m pretty sure everyone can tell who he is without them!

Apologies for the terrible backgrounds, these photos were taken just as we were leaving for school, and there wasn’t time for posing.

At the parade there were a handful of Ash Ketchums, including one of the teachers! They all looked different, but I think our Ash was the most ‘homemade’ 🙂

  3. You’re so clever and resourceful Fiona. I didn’t put any effort into my son’s Book Week costume this year. He didn’t care though. If he’s still into Pokemon next year I might just have to copy your idea. Thanks for linking up last week. I’m featuring this one at tomorrow’s party. Love seeing your posts.
